If you ask Chris\u00adtian Molt what is impor\u00adtant to him in his daily work, you\u2019ll get a straight answer, namely \u201cteam\u00adwork\u201d. And he and his team demon\u00adstrate just how effec\u00adtive good team\u00adwork can be. He first started work at Uhlmann in February 2024 as Head of Produc\u00adtion, and since April 2025 he has also been serving as Head of Oper\u00ada\u00adtions, respon\u00adsible for control, produc\u00adtion plan\u00adning, main\u00adte\u00adnance, service, and quality. His verdict after almost two years with the company is \u201cVery posi\u00adtive\u201d: \u201cWe have some great people working here who are driving the company forward. You can also tell that Uhlmann is a family busi\u00adness, because people look out for each other, are incred\u00adibly value-oriented, and focused not only on sales growth, but also on dura\u00adbility and sustain\u00adability across gener\u00ada\u00adtions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, value orien\u00adta\u00adtion and trust are very impor\u00adtant factors. But I am also results-driven: we need to ensure that we achieve the goals we set ourselves.<\/p>\nChris\u00adtian Molt, Head of Oper\u00ada\u00adtions<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Chris\u00adtian Molt is convinced that together we can achieve more. There is currently plenty of work to do for him and his 188 staff, and the team is partic\u00adu\u00adlarly focused on produc\u00adtivity: \u201cCapacity utiliza\u00adtion is fluc\u00adtu\u00adating wildly, and infla\u00adtion is making many things more expen\u00adsive for Uhlmann. So it\u2019s vital that we keep costs under control while still staying customer-focused.\u201d For the 44-year-old, automa\u00adtion is a key enabler in achieving this goal. The aim is to utilize produc\u00adtion capac\u00adi\u00adties in unmanned shifts on Satur\u00addays and Sundays as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milling processes around the clock<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A new pallet handling system will make this possible in the future. It serves as  storage for the connected milling machines, stores pre-loaded pallets, and makes them avail\u00adable to the systems. These then process the parts auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcally. Chris\u00adtian Molt explains: \u201cThree systems are already auto\u00admated at our facility, and we can link four new machines to the pallet system.\u201d Prepa\u00adra\u00adtions are underway to ensure that every\u00adthing is ready by the time the system is deliv\u00adered in August 2026.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their search for opti\u00admiza\u00adtion oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties, Molt and his team are also taking a close look at other areas. The new assembly cell in pre-assembly is a good example: \u201cUntil now, colleagues have spent a lot of time searching for the parts they need before they can start pre-assembly. The cell means they have all the essen\u00adtial compo\u00adnents at their finger\u00adtips. This makes their work easier and reduces setup times,\u201d explains Chris\u00adtian Molt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many building blocks, one goal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All measures contribute to our GO FOR 30 corpo\u00adrate strategy. The team is also synchro\u00adnizing the existing strategy of the Oper\u00ada\u00adtions divi\u00adsion with GO FOR 30 to ensure that everyone is working toward the same goal. Chris\u00adtian Molt says, \u201cUlti\u00admately, we are part of the bigger picture and need to demon\u00adstrate how we are contributing to achieving the goals of the corpo\u00adrate strategy.\u201d That\u2019s why his team develops concepts and defines courses of action and measures for each indi\u00advidual func\u00adtional area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What issues are you focusing on at present?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Our current focus is on automa\u00adtion. Together with my colleagues, I\u2019m redesigning the produc\u00adtion process for the instal\u00adla\u00adtion of the new pallet handling system, which entails various relo\u00adca\u00adtions and opti\u00admiza\u00adtions. We\u2019re also collab\u00ado\u00adrating with the holding company on the \u201cFactory X\u201d project. To this end, we are imple\u00admenting measuring systems on the machines to make energy consump\u00adtion trans\u00adparent and iden\u00adtify poten\u00adtial savings. At the same time, we are running a project on the use of AI: In the future, the machines should be able to answer queries in the event of a malfunc\u00adtion. This will enable main\u00adte\u00adnance personnel and employees to respond more swiftly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and chal\u00adlenges do you see here?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The biggest chal\u00adlenge we face is having to imple\u00adment the whole thing during ongoing oper\u00ada\u00adtions \u2013 it\u2019s like performing open-heart surgery. Day-to-day busi\u00adness continues while we set up the automa\u00adtion and harmo\u00adnize soft\u00adware, machines, and systems \u2013 while keeping produc\u00adtion down\u00adtime as low as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As far as oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties are concerned, in the future we will be less depen\u00addent on personnel working weekend shifts and will be able to manu\u00adfac\u00adture 24\/7. This will make us more inde\u00adpen\u00addent and future-proof as a company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you partic\u00adu\u00adlarly like about your job and what is impor\u00adtant to you?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I think it\u2019s impor\u00adtant that we are open and honest with each other\u2013 and that we can also address crit\u00adical issues. That works very well in our team. I also like the fact that my work is so varied; you never know in the morning what the day will bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you value most about your team?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I like the fact that we have a great mix of people, both in terms of age and person\u00adality. Everyone has their own area of exper\u00adtise, but we can still talk shop and discuss things together. What issues are you focusing on at present?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Automa\u00adtion is also a big issue for my team and me. We are currently exam\u00adining which parts we can still transfer to the auto\u00admated systems. Program\u00adming entails setting up the NC programs accord\u00adingly, because we have to ensure that the right parts are fed into the machine and that a fully auto\u00admated program sequence is guar\u00adan\u00adteed. Another issue is general process opti\u00admiza\u00adtion. In other words, we need to ask ourselves how we can manu\u00adfac\u00adture our parts even more cost-effec\u00adtively while ensuring higher process reli\u00ada\u00adbility and thus also quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and chal\u00adlenges do you see here?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The chal\u00adlenge lies in the fact that much of this is new, and you first need to famil\u00adiarize your\u00adself with every\u00adthing, run tests, and try out new processes. And, on top of that, all of this is happening along\u00adside our day-to-day busi\u00adness.

What do you partic\u00adu\u00adlarly like about your job and what is impor\u00adtant to you?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I like the variety my job brings. We often have to find solu\u00adtions at short notice, and engaging with the team is some\u00adthing I partic\u00adu\u00adlarly enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Team\u00adwork is impor\u00adtant to me, whether it\u2019s with my own staff or colleagues from other depart\u00adments. When we commu\u00adni\u00adcate and interact with each other it\u2019s impor\u00adtant we do so in a spirit of mutual respect so that we can collec\u00adtively find the best solu\u00adtion for our company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you value most about your team?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, there\u2019s the team\u2019s profes\u00adsional exper\u00adtise \u2013 everyone knows exactly what they\u2019re doing and how it works. And secondly, we can all rely on each other, espe\u00adcially when there are issues to discuss or prob\u00adlems that need resolving. Our key issues are delivery times and meeting dead\u00adlines in produc\u00adtion \u2013 in other words, ensuring that we can get the right parts to the assembly line at the right time. Another issue is inven\u00adtory in produc\u00adtion: we have to keep a constant eye on capacity utiliza\u00adtion so that we can opti\u00admize throughput times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and chal\u00adlenges do you see here?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The biggest change will come from increasing automa\u00adtion. In the future, we will have to plan the sequence \u2013 and manage inven\u00adto\u00adries \u2013 differ\u00adently. Espe\u00adcially when auto\u00admated systems also run on week\u00adends, it\u2019s crucial to provide the right parts and plan the work\u00adload accord\u00adingly. This is a chal\u00adlenge because it changes the way we work and requires us to estab\u00adlish new processes. It also takes time for the team to rethink its approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see this as an oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity for us to grow closer together with the assembly depart\u00adment. And we learn to under\u00adstand each other\u2019s key issues and develop solu\u00adtions together. This promotes mutual under\u00adstanding while also improving our processes as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you partic\u00adu\u00adlarly like about your job and what is impor\u00adtant to you?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I like the fact that we are involved in the entire parts manu\u00adfac\u00adturing process: we see how the parts arrive and how they are processed here. This entails working closely with the assembly team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, it\u2019s impor\u00adtant that we are open and honest with each other, and that  you can voice crit\u00adi\u00adcism without fear of nega\u00adtive conse\u00adquences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you value most about your team?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We work well together as a team, and everyone can discuss things openly. This open commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion was one of the reasons why I stayed on after my intern\u00adship semester. Mutual trust among colleagues is high, and you can tell that everyone is working toward the same goal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Chris\u00adtian Molt and his team also play a key role in the Next Step program. It\u2019s essen\u00adtial to have close collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion between our different divi\u00adsions so that we can imple\u00adment our inte\u00adgral solu\u00adtions concept more effec\u00adtively and offer customers added value from machines, soft\u00adware, and services. \u201cIden\u00adti\u00adfying areas for improve\u00adment is a shared respon\u00adsi\u00adbility,\u201d stresses Molt. He is convinced that coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion must change so that everyone can contribute. \u201cThere can be no more silos in the future. We need to incor\u00adpo\u00adrate different perspec\u00adtives without losing speed \u2013 that\u2019s the chal\u00adlenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the condi\u00adtions for this are good, says Chris\u00adtian Molt. \u201cI\u2019m convinced that we can really make a differ\u00adence with our team; and \u2013as the Swabians would say \u2013 we\u2019re a really good bunch. Everyone here is pulling in the same direc\u00adtion, and I am incred\u00adibly proud of this team\u2019s effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main issue for me right now is reducing costs; our aim is to become more effi\u00adcient. In the raw mate\u00adrials ware\u00adhouse, we are currently in the process of stan\u00addard\u00adizing mate\u00adrials and removing redun\u00addant stock.
Another major topic is automa\u00adtion: increasing equip\u00adment utiliza\u00adtion rates are also changing processes in my area, for example, when it comes to the ques\u00adtion of when mate\u00adrials and tools need to be at the machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and chal\u00adlenges do you see here?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Together with Stefan Kullen, I super\u00advise some 60 staff working in three shifts.
Our focus is also on increasing produc\u00adtivity and cutting costs. That\u2019s why it\u2019s crucial that we make effi\u00adcient use of the machines and main\u00adtain stable utiliza\u00adtion rates. It\u2019s also impor\u00adtant to deploy and train staff in such a way that every\u00adthing runs smoothly despite down\u00adtime or malfunc\u00adtions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and chal\u00adlenges do you see here?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

A major chal\u00adlenge is getting employees to embrace change and explaining to them why we are taking certain measures. Only those who under\u00adstand the reasons for the measures will really pitch in.

Every day, we have to respond to unplanned situ\u00ada\u00adtions, whether it\u2019s absent employees, machine malfunc\u00adtions, or missing mate\u00adrials. That makes the job exciting and constantly chal\u00adlenging for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and chal\u00adlenges do you see here?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The biggest chal\u00adlenge is to make all processes so stable that they continue to work even in the event of a malfunc\u00adtion. The upcoming automa\u00adtion will enable us to take the next step forward and further boost produc\u00adtivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you value most about your team?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We work incred\u00adibly well together. We consult closely with each other, espe\u00adcially during shift handovers, to ensure that no infor\u00adma\u00adtion is lost. I am currently working on setting up pre-assembly in Plant 5, designing the tool shop, and contin\u00adu\u00adously opti\u00admizing format assembly. The objec\u00adtive is to increase the provi\u00adsion of fully assem\u00adbled compo\u00adnents in format assembly so as to reduce throughput time and quickly detect any faults. This requires close coor\u00addi\u00adna\u00adtion with the control station, project manage\u00adment, and internal and external customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and chal\u00adlenges do you see here?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The biggest chal\u00adlenge lies in the myriad inter\u00adfaces involved. It\u2019s impor\u00adtant that we have everyone involved on board and keep track of every\u00adthing. Given all the changes underway at present, it\u2019s vital that we don\u2019t leave our most valu\u00adable asset \u2013 our employees \u2013 behind. Changes require effec\u00adtive support \u2013this is a central manage\u00adment task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am involved in the entire value creation process \u2013 from indi\u00advidual parts to the finished format set. No two days are the same; you constantly need to respond flex\u00adibly, make deci\u00adsions, and find solu\u00adtions together. I partic\u00adu\u00adlarly enjoy this diver\u00adsity and working closely with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, it\u2019s impor\u00adtant that we can talk openly about every\u00adthing \u2013 even crit\u00adical issues. We support each other, provide feed\u00adback, and help each other when someone is facing a diffi\u00adcult situ\u00ada\u00adtion. This trust is the foun\u00adda\u00adtion of our work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you value most about your team?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

What I value is our open commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion and close coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion. We have a strong manage\u00adment team where everyone knows what everyone else is doing \u2013 we speak with one voice and we all pull together.
