\nWhen he notices that he has no camera avail\u00adable for our online appoint\u00adment, Tobias Ego starts to laugh. Because cameras is what he dealt with inten\u00adsively over the last six months in his func\u00adtion as head of the \u201cRemote FAT\u201c project. Among other things \u2013 because if you intend to digi\u00adtize the Factory Accep\u00adtance Test (FAT), then many aspects have to be consid\u00adered. Tobias Ego shares with us what exactly this involves. He has imple\u00admented this project together with Dominik D\u00f6rr, Chris\u00adtian Merk, Siegfried Hermann, Stefan Schwarz, Werner Blersch, and Cris\u00adtian Reiter, and presented the result to the Exec\u00adu\u00adtive Board in July 2021.<\/p>\n

I could imagine that we will have a kind of blend of classic and Remote FAT in the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe topic of Remote FATs was already in the air before the Covid-19 pandemic, but the customers simply weren\u2019t too thrilled about remote factory accep\u00adtance tests. They were used to coming to us, to accepting machines on site and to maybe eat our Swabian pret\u00adzels\u201c, Ego says. During the massive trav\u00adel\u00adling restric\u00adtions due to the pandemic, the situ\u00ada\u00adtion changed overnight. When a FAT with a Brazilian customer was immi\u00adnent, cameras were quickly bought and the FAT was carried out remotely. This, however, was not really a perma\u00adnent solu\u00adtion. So Tobias Ego and his team embarked on turning the emer\u00adgency solu\u00adtion of the remote FAT into a valid option.<\/p>\n

Not compli\u00adcated is key<\/h3>\n

To put Remote FATs on a profes\u00adsional basis, the colleagues, among them also project leaders with expe\u00adri\u00adence in remote tech\u00adnology, got an overview of how other compa\u00adnies proceed and how for example the Group company Koch or the ExU partner Fette are equipped. They checked whether data goggles would make sense and inspected how the machine surround\u00adings would have to be illu\u00admi\u00adnated, because: \u201cYou can have excel\u00adlent cameras \u2013 but if the sun is blinding you, they won\u2019t help you a bit\u201d, states Tobias Ego.<\/p>\n

Well thought out and compact: This system enables the remote FAT.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On top of this, the team compared different systems and also looked at what an external film recording provider had to offer. \u201cThey came to us with a 7.5-ton truck. What we need is some\u00adthing uncom\u00adpli\u00adcated, and with as little cabling as possible. Our focus was rather on mobile cameras, because with them we can also walk along extended lines without cables and without prob\u00adlems so that we can demon\u00adstrate the lines to our customers\u201d, Ego explains.<\/p>\n

The team devel\u00adoped a solu\u00adtion: Though it is on rollers, too, it is clearly more compact: a cabinet, equipped with three iPads, one iPhone, a Gigacube to ensure wire\u00adless connec\u00adtivity, a note\u00adbook, four portable chargers, three head\u00adsets, three tripods, one gimbal which ensures stability for smart\u00adphones, a charging station, and acces\u00adsories. This way, the Factory Accep\u00adtance Test works almost like a normal Teams meeting \u2013 the only differ\u00adence being that the customers see machines instead of faces.<\/p>\n

Customers are convinced<\/h3>\n

Uhlmann has purchased four systems of this kind, 20 Remote FATs have been carried out so far. And the customer feed\u00adback speaks for itself: \u201cA huge \u2018Thank you\u2018 to you and the whole team at Uhlmann for the absolutely smooth orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion on site\u201c, was for example what one customer wrote to Tobias Ego. Praise that the project leader likes to pass on: \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t have succeeded without the very good coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion within the team.\u201c<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that the Remote FAT works out so well, Ego thinks that most customers want to continue to visit Uhlmann for a tradi\u00adtional type of FAT. Some project leaders would even prefer that. Because it is their task to moderate the whole Remote FAT, which some\u00adtimes takes several hours. \u201dThat is not to be under\u00ades\u00adti\u00admated, without any breaks\u201c, Ego states. But he is convinced that it is vital for Uhlmann to have both options ready \u2013 the tradi\u00adtional and the remote type of FATs: \u201cI could imagine that we will have a kind of blend in the future, so that not the whole team comes here but that a part of them for example partic\u00adi\u00adpates from China.\u201d Because less trav\u00adel\u00adling is good for the budget \u2013 and for the climate.<\/p>\n
