When two decide to join forces, it is by means said that it will be a success. The rough edges of either party first become apparent when contacts are inten\u00adsi\u00adfied.<\/p>\n

However, when signing the agree\u00adment in December 2019, the managing direc\u00adtors were confi\u00addent about the good coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion prospects between Uhlmann Pac-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG and pester pac automa\u00adtion GmbH. The common factors spoke in favor: two family-owned compa\u00adnies, both leading global system suppliers \u2013 one for the pack\u00adaging of phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adtical prod\u00aducts in blis\u00adters, bottles, and cartons, the other for end-of-line pack\u00adaging solu\u00adtions. Both with their base in Southern Germany and barely one hour\u2019s drive apart.<\/p>\n

When we talk, it some\u00adtimes feels as though my thoughts are being read. That makes work enjoy\u00adable and was the case from the very first minute.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sizing up prior to the agree\u00adment<\/h3>\n

The first minute was back in summer 2019. A small circle of Uhlmann employees trav\u00adeled to Allg\u00e4u to visit Pester. Strict secrecy was the order of the day as it was uncer\u00adtain what the outcome would be. In addi\u00adtion to Ralf Brehm, Project Manager Chris\u00adtian Link, Project Assis\u00adtant Stefan Birk-Braun, Torsten Pfalz\u00adgraf from Purchasing, Hubert Schmid from Services, Klaus Braig from Sales, and Tobias Sch\u00f6ff\u00admann, Electrics, attended. After taking stock, the team defined the main features of the joint project and visited the part of the team in Laupheim.<\/p>\n

The alliance was then offi\u00adcially sealed in December 2019 by Norbert Rechner (Managing Director, Pester), Roland Rassl (Managing Director, Pester), Tim Slomp (CTO, Uhlmann), Thomas Pester (CEO, Pester), and Michael Mrachacz (CSO, Uhlmann). However, the project team still needed to furnish proof of the real suit\u00adability of the match. Put in concrete terms, the aim was to develop four new end-of-line pack\u00adaging machines for Uhlmann phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adtical pack\u00adaging lines within six months \u2013 a pace only to be achieved by parties that under\u00adstand each other.<\/p>\n

Brehm\u2019s main contacts at Pester were and are Tatjana Akolk, Project Manager Busi\u00adness Unit Pharma, respon\u00adsible for project activ\u00adi\u00adties, and Manfred Albrecht, Asso\u00adciate Tech\u00adnical Director Busi\u00adness Unit Pharma, in charge of machines. Albrecht also senses the mind-reading feeling: \u201cIt is some\u00adtimes like with twins\u201d, says the deputy tech\u00adnical head from Pester.<\/p>\n

An impres\u00adsion that Akolk can confirm: \u201cCommu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion is really super. There are always occa\u00adsional sticking points in such a process. And when one\u2019s oppo\u00adsite says: \u02bbIt would be no different with us\u2019, you sense the under\u00adstanding, says Akolk. She left the chem\u00adical sector to join Pester during the initial phases of the project. This enabled her to promote devel\u00adop\u00adment of the end-of-line pack\u00adaging machines without having a blink\u00adered view.<\/p>\n

Chal\u00adlenge accepted<\/h3>\n

Despite the plea\u00adsure of working together, it was an inten\u00adsive time for the cross-company team. Both sides under\u00adstand end-of-line pack\u00adaging machinery and did not have to \u201crein\u00advent the wheel\u201d, as Brehm puts it. However, when the \u201cwheel\u201d is supposed to fit two vehi\u00adcles, plenty of work is involved. The four stan\u00addard machine models needed to be defined, tech\u00adnical data clar\u00adi\u00adfied, and the design coor\u00addi\u00adnated. Price lists had to be prepared, a more intel\u00adli\u00adgent ordering process for customers orga\u00adnized, and processes defined. \u201cAll of that went on in addi\u00adtion to normal busi\u00adness. Work did occa\u00adsion\u00adally go on into the evening and some\u00adtimes several phone calls took place in a day\u201d, says Albrecht.<\/p>\n

The pandemic was an added factor. The first public presen\u00adta\u00adtion of a machine under the label \u201cUhlmann powered by pester pac automa\u00adtion\u201d should have taken place at the inter\u00adpack trade show in May 2020. Konstantin Gerbold, Global Product Manager at Uhlmann, explains: \u201cThe cancel\u00adla\u00adtion of inter\u00adpack stopped our planned product launch. We had to adjust quickly and we all surpassed ourselves. Even product instruc\u00adtion for sales personnel was orga\u00adnized digi\u00adtally. Good that our colleagues from Marketing quickly came up with a creative solu\u00adtion for virtual sales training. The feed\u00adback from sales colleagues throughout the world was over\u00adwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is seen in Asia, for example, where the customer wants inte\u00adgrated lines. Our coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion enables us to comple\u00adment each other in many areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the present trend continues, the team will have plenty of reasons to do so. The team has handled new machine projects amounting to a volume of EUR 5.6 million in the first twelve months of the coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion.<\/p>\n
