There is always a first time, and this was the case for both the phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adtical company AbbVie and Uhlmann. Novel for AbbVie was the need for a contain\u00adment solu\u00adtion to package a new product \u2013 a solu\u00adtion that prevents contact between machine oper\u00ada\u00adtors and the product during pack\u00adaging. Novel for the Uhlmann team was the conver\u00adsion of a non-contain\u00adment machine to a contain\u00adment machine. As if that was not chal\u00adlenging enough, another factor impacted the project, increased adren\u00ada\u00adline levels, and set minds more inten\u00adsively to work: time.<\/p>\n

Every\u00adthing began in February 2020 with a work\u00adshop on contain\u00adment basics, which was orga\u00adnized for AbbVie. Every\u00adthing took off from there. The reason being that AbbVie wanted to use its two-week vaca\u00adtion close-down in August for the conver\u00adsion. Nici Hagel, already three years at Uhlmann, was respon\u00adsible for the project on our part. She recounts: \u201cWe hadn\u2019t even elab\u00ado\u00adrated the quote when the request came to upgrade the machine in August.\u201d<\/p>\n

Design engi\u00adneer Markus Locher grabbed three colleagues: Wilhelm Held took over protec\u00adtive measures for the fill section and overall respon\u00adsi\u00adbility, while Markus Habdank tended to the product feeding unit and Markus Eder to extrac\u00adtion in the rear area of the blister machine.<\/p>\n

All work hand in hand<\/h3>\n

The conse\u00adquence of the tight time schedule: The design review, which enables the customer to see the machine in its entirety and give approval, had to be split. Project leader Nici Hagel was constantly in contact with AbbVie to coor\u00addi\u00adnate the process. \u201cEach review was quickly signed and AbbVie\u2019s response was always super\u201d, says Hagel, praising the good team\u00adwork. The great faith placed by AbbVie in Uhlmann played a role here. \u201cWe have been coop\u00ader\u00adating with Uhlmann for a long time\u201d, says Darius Jochem\u00adczyk, Engi\u00adneering Manager at AbbVie. \u201cI felt sure from the outset that every\u00adthing would work out well.\u201d<\/p>\n

One partic\u00adular chal\u00adlenge was the fact that the premises them\u00adselves at AbbVie were modi\u00adfied at the same time as instal\u00adla\u00adtion of the contain\u00adment equip\u00adment. The Uhlmann team had to come to terms with the various tech\u00adnical crews on site, always with the tight time schedule in the back of their minds. \u201cDuring work on the ceiling, for instance, we were unable to enter a certain area and had to wear helmets\u201d, says Nici Hagel. \u201cBut we managed to pull together with all the compa\u00adnies for it to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

High pace despite coro\u00adn\u00adavirus<\/h3>\n

The fact that the entire job had to take place during a pandemic did not ease the situ\u00ada\u00adtion. As the team had to work with shorter lead times, it was uncer\u00adtain just how reli\u00adable the supply of parts would be. Hagel was in close contact with Purchasing, Armin Manz, and the Control Center, Thomas Schmid. Her r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is posi\u00adtive: \u201cThe team\u00adwork across all divi\u00adsions was excel\u00adlent\u201d, says Hagel. \u201cAs the impor\u00adtance of the project was obvious, some colleagues even post\u00adponed vaca\u00adtion to attend to the work.\u201d<\/p>\n
